With the 90s trend growing season by season, here at Birthday we have been taking a look back at one of our favourite movies of the decade, Clueless. Released in 1995 and based on Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless follows the lives of three teenage girls living and attending high school in Beverly Hills. The film known for its style as much as its dodgy ending (falling for your stepbrother? In the words of protagonist Cher- ugh, as if!), if Clueless can tell us one thing about the 90’s, it’s that it’s not all cringe worthy tie-dye and cut off shorts.
Best friends Cher and Dionne form the basis of their relationship on not only the fact they’re named after divas of decades past- Dionne and Cher – but also that they’re used to people being jealous of them, and we’re no exception. The tartan two pieces, Mary Jane flats and sheer shirts make us squeal with wardrobe envy. Not to mention that Cher has her very own virtual reality closet, something we could all do with after pressing the snooze button one too many times in the morning.
The pair may co-ordinate outfit decisions, but it’s partner in crime Dionne that steals the fashion points in our books. Rocking the sports luxe trend when Rihanna was barely out of nappies, if Dionne’s outfit choices can teach us one thing it’s not to be afraid of making a statement. Her Peter Pan collared shirts paired with berry velvet dresses and knee-high socks may sound like a fancy dress outfit gone one step too far – but Dionne pulls it off with confidence.
If, like us, you’re lusting after Dionne’s look- and hoping to avoid being, ‘ensembly challenged’, as the Clueless girls would say – we love this River Island dress, which combines both the 90’s and tartan trends. Wear over a white shirt to emulate the look – or tone down with black tights and boots for an outfit that ties in with another big movement this season- grunge.
Although Dionne seems to be able to wear pretty much whatever she wants effortlessly, most of us can’t pull off an oversized plastic top hat. For those who appreciate simpler outfit choices, skater skirts and crop tops are a 90’s girl’s wardrobe essentials. But it wouldn’t be the nineties without a logo. Being the decade the world went designer mad, it’s no wonder there’s more name drops in Clueless than on the first day of school. As not all of us can afford Cher and Dionne’s designer labels, channel the girl’s ridiculously impractical P.E uniform with a monochrome baseball t-shirt and mesh details.
She may not always be on point -Dionne’s hat collection is worthy of our worst nightmares and sweater vests are never a cute look – but with her sharp wit and ability to call out her soon to be fiancé on his errors, combined with her awe inspiring outfit creations – Dionne is our style crush.
